Introduction

In January 2009 a Bird Feeding Station was created in the reserve. It is located just outside the Vinters Valley Lodge and attracts a number of different species. Visitors to the reserve can watch and monitor the birds through holes cut into the wooden fence panels. (kindly donated by Boxley Timber & Fencing Supplies LTD)

During August 2009 the feeding station was improved. With the help and funding of Barclays Bank a new wildlife pond was created, allowing birds to drink and bathe.

Following the success of the Feeding Station at the lodge, another feeding area has been created in Netley Meadow in January 2010.

Spring 2010 News

Visitors to the reserve may have noticed that the Lodge Feeding Station and the Netley Meadow Feeding Area are very quiet at the moment and that most of the feeders are empty.

Over the last few weeks we have seen the number of birds visiting slowly drop. This activity is normal for the time of year with many species now nesting and rearing young. The food we provide in our feeders (Seed, Wheat, Peanuts, Bread, Fat Balls) are not suitable to feed young chicks with. As we enter the warmer months more natural food sources are becoming available so the birds do not need to visit the feeders as oftern or rely on them as a food source.

We have decided to not feed the birds until the nesting/breeding season is over. From the end of August we will start to feed them again and the number of birds visiting will increase again.
