Bird Boxes project - Diary
pages 2009 Season - 7th March 2009
The first survey of 2009 was carried out today. Although the weather was not sunny we still found some boxes in use and being inspected.
In Zone1 (Lower Fullingpits Wood) one of the Blue Tit boxes was being inspected by a pair but no entries were made inside. Also one of the Great Tit boxes was being inspected by a pair of Great Tits.
One of the Dormouse boxes was found to have some new moss inside so a species has started to possibly build a nest. At the moment it is unknow whether this is a Blue Tit or Great Tit.
In Zone 5 (The Kitchen Gardens) three boxes have possible residents interested in them. Two of the Blue Tit boxes had Blue Tits very close by, but no entries were made inside and one of the Great Tit boxes had a female sitting outside the box.
In Zone 11 (MacGrory Meadow) the recently added new Great Tit box saw two pairs of Blue Tits fighting over ownership of it.
The rest of the areas were quiet, however it is still early in the season.
The highlight of today's survey was seeing one of the Robin boxes being already occupied. During the survey we observed a pair investigating the box as their potential home very often. Also the male was seen feeding the female (his partner) in a tree nearby, so hopefully a nest will be built.
Hopefully the weather will now begin to warm up and we will begin to see more boxes being used.
The results from today's survey can be found under the "Survey Results" section.
