Bird Boxes project - Diary
pages 2009 Season - 16th May
This season has certainly been different as it is the first year I can remember for a long time for being normal (weather etc)!
There are now 45 boxes in use with many of the boxes now seeing young Blue Tits and Great Tits being fed by the parents. At the moment it sadly looks like two nests may have failed or been abandoned, but this is still to be confirmed. Over the next few weeks many of the chicks will fledge and the nestboxes will not be used until the winter.
The Robins nest that was discovered by Jane is still in use and a Robin has been seen around the nestbox and some eggs may have been laid. One of the Tawny Owl boxes looked like it was in use two weeks ago but no new activity has been observed now for a while so it looks like the box is not in use.
One of the Great Tit boxes, located in the cow field, is not in use. In previous surveys Steve had observed a Blue Tit checking the box but never entering. The reason possibly why was discovered last week when a Great Tit's nest was discovered in the Oak tree very close by. Blue Tits and Great Tits do not like nesting near each other.
During my survey this week I found another three boxes in use and Steve also found another two in his survey area. With the nesting season appearing to be going on longer this year we have decided to extend the survey peroid into the first two weeks of June. Surveys will now continue until 13th June.
