Bird Boxes project - Diary pages 2009 Season - 21st March 2009

Spring weather at last. The weather certainly appears to have made many Blue Tits think about nest building, but the Great Tits seem a little behind at the moment but I did observe one box being inspected by a male.

During today's survey seven boxes were observed being visited by female Blue Tits with them bringing in nesting material already. Most of the material was of moss found on the valley floor but one female was bringing in strands of grass. Blue Tits are known to start building then decide to take out the nesting material all out again. They will start nesting fully around the beginning of April. Pratice makes perfect :)

The Robin boxes are also seeing some activity with three being visited, so there is the possiblity of some nests being built, although it is a bit early in the season yet.

The weather seems to be sadly turning wet and windy over the next few days so Spring may be on hold for a few weeks. Hopefully over the next few weeks we will begin to see more boxes being used and Great Tits starting to build nests.

The results from today's survey can be found under the "Survey Results" section.

The areas normally surveyed by Jane (Zones 6, 7, 8 & 9) are being covered by Jackie until further notice.
