Bird Boxes project - Diary
pages 2010 Season - 24th February 2010
Welcome to the 2010 season.
How time has gone by and the 2010 season surveys are nearly upon us. During the winter months we have been busy cleaning out all the used boxes, repairing some of the boxes damaged and putting up two more boxes. The cleanout process has taken longer this year, due to the amount of cold, snow and ice we had. As many of you now know, this winter has been the coldest for nearly 30 years and there have been concerns that this will have reduced the number of birds. Will we see the number of boxes in use lower this year? At the moment it is too early to tell.
This weekend I will be renumbering all the boxes so surveys can begin in March and putting up three repaired boxes. During February, whilst going around the reserve, I have noticed that many of the boxes are already being inspected and claimed by species. Already we have a pair of Nuthatch's inspecting and entering one of the boxes and I hope this year we will see them have a successful nest.
This year we also have a new volunteer who is going to be helping out with the surveys this year. My thanks to Clive Vero for kindly agreeing to help.
